    How Media sets work:
One of the most common misunderstandings with Backup Exec is how media sets work. It's common for people to think that by assigning a job to a media set, the media from that set will be used for the job. In actual fact, this assignment means that any media used in the job will be added or moved to this media set. A media set is a group of media which have certain attributes applied. The main attributes are:

    • Append periods - how long the media should be appendable for after writing
    • Overwrite protection period - how long the media should be protected from overwriting
    • Vault rules - when the media should be moved to and retrieved from a vault

The way AP, OPP and vaulting rules work is simple, but complex to understand. Append Period is how long you will allow data to be added to this medium. This is measured from the time the media is first added to the media set. Overwrite Protection Period is how long you want the media to be protected from being overwritten, and is measured from the time the tape is last written to. Once the OPP has expired, the media can be overwritten (it becomes recyclable).

    How Backup Exec selects media:

A common problem with Backup Exec is that unexpected media get used for a backup job. This generally stems from the complexity of a few settings.

Once you have your media sets configured, you need to think about how you want the media to be used for the backup jobs. The two settings that determine the selection criteria are the Overwrite Protection Level and the Media Overwrite Option. When you first configure Backup Exec, you get asked what you want to set for these options. Unless you knew otherwise, you probably chose the defaults.
The Overwrite Protection Level determines how aggressively Backup Exec is going to try and protect your data. There are three options:

    • Full - Overwrite Protection Periods will be applied to media sets
    • Partial - Overwrite Protection Periods will be applied to media sets
    • None - Overwrite Protection Periods will not be applied to media sets

Starting with the easiest to eliminate, the None options means that any media can be overwritten, regardless of any Overwrite Protection Period you have set. Unless you have a specific need for this, I'd advise against it.
The Full and Partial options are very similar. The difference is that if you choose Partial, then imported media can be overwritten. The safest option is to choose Full protection. If you frequently import media and use it for your backup jobs, use partial.
Once you have set your Overwrite Protection Level, you need to set the Media Overwrite option. This determines whether Backup Exec is going to be biased towards using new media first, or reusing old media first. The options are:

    • Overwrite scratch media before overwriting recyclable media contained in the targeted media set
    • Overwrite recyclable media contained in the targeted media set before overwriting scratch media

The first option will encourage Backup Exec to use any new tapes rather than overwrite older tapes. The second option will encourage Backup Exec to overwrite older tapes rather than use new media.
Once you've understood and configured these two options, how does Backup Exec actually choose what media to use? The first thing that is used to determine is what tape drive, library, library partition, or B2D folder is selected. Obviously for a tape drive, or partition with only one tape in, either the media is usable or it's not.
On page 229 and 230 of the Backup Exec 10d Administrator's Guide there is a table which tells you the answer, so rather than copy that, I'd encourage you to read it for yourself. However, if you have Full Overwrite Protection set, I'll summarise:
An overwrite job with Overwrite scratch media first set:

    1. Use any media in the scratch set
    2. Use the oldest (if any) recyclable (overwritable) media in the targeted media set
    3. Use the oldest (if any) recyclable (overwritable) media in any other media set

An overwrite job with Overwrite recyclable media first set:

    1. Use the oldest (if any) recyclable (overwritable) media in the targeted media set
    2. Use any media in the scratch set
    3. Use the oldest (if any) recyclable (overwritable) media in any other media set

It's clear to see that with the first option, if you have plenty of scratch media to start with, it'll get used up quickly!
    An append job

If any appendable media is found in the backup device, that is used first. If no appendable media is found, then either the job changes to an overwrite job, or the job is terminated. If an append job fills a tape, then the next overwritable piece of media is used to continue the job.

Continued in the second page -->

Exchange 2007 has the following predefined groups that manage Exchange configuration data:

    • Exchange Organization Administrators
    • Exchange Recipient Administrators
    • Exchange View-Only Administrators
    • Exchange Server Administrators

The following tasks should be performed in order to connect to and back up the Exchange 2007 Information Store Databases using Backup Exec:

If the Exchange server is not locally installed on the Backup Exec media server, confirm the following:

    • The Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers is installed on the Exchange 2007 server(s).

    • The Microsoft Exchange 2007 Management Tools are installed on the Backup Exec media server.

32 bit Media Servers - (Note: Microsoft Windows 2008 x32 was not supported in the original release. The Exchange 2007 Management Tools from the SP1 package, E2K7SP1EN32.exe) must be installed. Download Exchange 2007 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

64 bit Media Servers - To download the 64-bit version of the management tools, use the same media or download that is used to install Exchange 2007

Exchange Server 2007 is not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...CHG.80%29.aspx ). Exchange 2007 Management tools cannot be installed to a media server installed on Windows Server 2008 R2. We suggest using Windows Server 2008 SP2 or earlier so that all media server requirements can be met for Exchange GRT backups and restores. This is currently a Microsoft compatibility issue and will be updated if they decide to add support for this configuration in the future.

    • Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects (MAPI/CDO) are installed on the Exchange 2007 Server.

Download the MAPI/CDO 1.2.1 Package from Microsoft Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

    • Ensure the Backup Exec "Logon Account" (System Logon Account by default at Network > Logon Account in the Backup Exec console) being used to backup Exchange is:
    • A member of Domain Administrators
    • Is an explicit member of the Local Administrators group of the Exchange 2007 server (implied membership via Domain Admin group may not be sufficient)
    • BE logon account should be setup using domain credentials (ex. Domain\Username)

For further details on creating a new account with the proper permissions, refer to the following instructions:

    1. Go to Active Directory Users and Computers and go to the Users directory. Right-click on the Administrator account and select copy (Figure 1) and create an account for BACKUP EXEC.

    Figure 1

    2. Go to Network, Logon Accounts within the Backup Exec console. Click New... and enter the details of the account created in #1.

    Figure 2

    3. Open the Exchange Management Console.

    4. In the Exchange Management Console, select Organization Configuration. (Figure 3)

    Figure 3

    5. Right click on Organization Configuration and select Add Exchange Administrator. (Figure 4)

    Figure 4

    6. On the Add Exchange Administrator page, click Browse and select the user that you want to delegate control to.

    7. Select the Exchange Server Administrator Role radial button. (Figure 5)

    Figure 5

    8. Click Add and under Select the server(s) to which this role has access select the servers to which to delegate control.(Figure 6)

    Figure 6

    9. Click OK. Click Add.

    10. On the Completion page verify that the delegation was successful and click Finish.

    11. Define the jobs in Backup Exec by using the Resource Credentials pane to use the newly created "Logon Account".

Note: The requirements listed above only pertain to the basic configuration required to connect to and backup the Exchange 2007 Information Store databases, storage groups, etc... for the purpose of restoring these items in their entirety. To fully utilize the functionality of Exchange 2007 and prior GRT (Granular Recovery Technology) backups and restores, the following must be configured/confirmed:

    • The Exchange Administrator Account Backup Exec uses to attach to the Exchange Server must have a uniquely named mailbox within the Exchange organization that is not disabled or hidden from the Global Address List. This mailbox must also have sent and received mail to and from it. For more information on this, review the following document:

How to confirm that an Exchange mailbox name is unique within the Exchange organization when configuring Backup Exec to backup mailboxes or if a GRT (Granular Restore Technology) based backup does not display individual mailboxes for restore http://support.veritas.com/docs/256537

How to remove the "Hidden" attribute from Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 mailboxes so that the mailboxes will be available to the Global Address List for backup purposes

    http://support.veritas.com/docs/243328

    • Exchange 2007 and Outlook 2007 can not be installed on the same Windows 2003 Server.
    • For GRT Backups to tape, mailbox users must reside in the same domain as the Exchange Server. For more information, review the following:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exchange Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) backup to tape does not display the mailboxes in the restore selections for users that reside in a domain other than the Exchange server(s) domain. http://support.veritas.com/docs/295627

    • For GRT Backups to disk (B2D), the Backup to Disk Test Tool - B2Dtest.exe should be run on the target disk first to ensure the basic file level functionality requirements are met. For more information, review and download the following:

Information regarding the Backup Exec Backup to Disk Test Tool - B2Dtest.exe

    http://support.veritas.com/docs/321584

Note: If any of the above requirements cannot be confirmed, configured, etc... and there are any job failures or other issues, it is recommended to run at least one full test backup of Exchange with the Granular Recovery Option deselected prior to running another GRT Backup or opening a case with Symantec Technical Support.

انت لما بتاخد باك اب للدومين كونترولر فانت لازم تاخد ال
    system state
ودا لانها تحتوى على الداتا بيز نفسها بتاعة الدومين

    فممكن تاخد
Weekly full backup > system state
Daily incremental or differential backup > system state

You can make a Scheduled Backup and this should stick to the company Policy and it's Backup strategy.

    2-انا عندى شبكة ولم نستخدم

لا طبعا موضوع السناب شوت دا خاص بالفيرجوال ماشين
    يعنى زى ال
    VMware or HyperV ONLY.

دا هيتعمل على اسلوب الباك اب فى الشركة وعلى سياستها فى الخطة بتاعة الباك اب
بس المنطقى اكتر انك تعمل 2 MEDIA set
    Daily for Daily backups
    Weekly for Weekly

    And/or

    Monthly backup if exist.
    Quartly Backup if exist.
    Yearly if exist.

يعنى انا مثلا عندى فى الشركة

If the size of file server backup is not huge so You can make the DC and file server together in the same scheduled backup and you should make the exchange server 2007 in a separated backup.

معلش يا بشمهندس هتعبك بس والله محتاج الموضوع دا ضرورى جدا

لو عاملها بالتقسيمة دى يبقى تمام كدة بس انت مش محتاج تعمل 6
    media set
ممكن تعمل 2 فقط زى ما ذكرت اخر مرة
    واحدة
    weekly
    وواحدة
    Daily

    بما انك عندك 3 سيرفرات
    وهتعمل 3
    full backup
    و 3
    Daily backup
    يبقى صح انت محتاج 6
    backup to disk folders
